Neanderthal is a fragrance inspired by the Neanderthal Man, hominid who lived in the prehistoric period of the Paleolithic period, between 200 thousand and 40 thousand years ago. He was gifted with a refined intelligence, he painted, he made stone tools, jewels, he played an instrument similar to the flute. He lived with Homo Sapiens for 10,000 years and mysteriously disappeared 30,000 years ago. From the Neanderthals we inherited 1-4% of our DNA. The idea behind the Neandertal fragrance comes from a series of questions about the Nanderthal Man and contemporary man: who is and how would the Neanderthal Man be today? What smells would you perceive? What olfactory memories would you bring with you from your distant past and what scents would you notice in our days?
Neanderthal, the result of the collaboration between the Scottish perfumer Euan Mccall and the Japanese artist Kentaro Yamada, artistically responds to this historical, anthropological and cultural research. Proposed in two declinations, Light and Dark, Neandertal conceptualizes the relationship between prehistory and present; between instinct, animality and olfactory perception; between roots, memory and current reality; between beauty, nature and aesthetic experience. Neandertal Dark represents the darkest, most mysterious and animalistic interpretation of the concept: what is the olfactory legacy of the Neanderthal Man that we still carry inside, in our DNA and in the folds of memory? Echo of a primordial instinct, Neandertal Dark is far from the standards of traditional perfumery and challenges conventions, focusing on olfactory dissonance.
The top notes are a hymn to the Earth and its flora: green trees, fruit trees such as grapefruit, ginger roots, flowers, pink pepper berries. All green notes in strong contrast (and surprising agreement) with darker ones of cumin, incense, algae and geranium, deep heart of the perfume. The result is a complex, experimental fragrance that rests its persistence and intensity on the woody essences of sandalwood and cedar. A scent of wild charm, Neanderthal Dark: the scents of Nature, earthy, resinous and musky, blend with the final notes of leather, symbol of the animal instinct of the Neanderthal Man and of today's Man. The stoneware bottle is handmade by the artist Kentaro Yamada.
From the collaboration between the Japanese artist Kentaro Yamada and the scottish perfumer Euan McCall born the Neandertal perfumes, artistic, conceptual and unisex fragrances designed to celebrate the mysterious but indissoluble relationship between the Neanderthal and the contemporary Man. If Neanderthal, a hominid of refined intelligence and creative ability, were still among us, what perfumes would he perceive and how? A possible, fascinating answer in two fragrances: Neandertal Light, light, luminous and delicate; and Neandertal Dark, dark, smoky, wild. These are sophisticated blends, extraordinarily original and complex, far from the standards of traditional perfumery. Fresh, green and floral olfactory notes blend with innovative aromas, resinous distillates and mineral, earthy or animal compounds, like the natural smell of leather. The mixture of ingredients that exist even at the time of the Neanderthal Man along with other more contemporary rekindles a visceral olfactory memory, which has its roots, our roots, in Prehistory. Each Neandertal perfum bottle is unique and handmade by Kentaro Yamada.
